“Twenty years is a long time,” Lucy said, as we drove home. “Amber may have moved away from there years ago.”

“Well, we’re not going to know that until we get there,” I said.

“Do you believe him?”

“We’ve no reason not to at the moment.”

“It’s a real puzzle. What possible reason could Amber have for kidnapping Marjorie, or…murdering her?”

“You got me,” I said. “But every puzzle has a solution. I just need some time to figure it out.”

“But you think there’s a connection?”

“I’m convinced of it. If a girl is prepared to blackmail her own father it’s a good bet she’s capable of almost anything.”

“Maybe it was a kind of revenge. She couldn’t get the money, so she decided to kill Marjorie to get back at him.”

“I don’t think that’s likely. I think money’s the key. I think Chuck’s going to hear from young Amber again, real soon.”

But even I didn’t realize just how soon that would be. We’d barely walked through the front door when I got a call on my cell. It was Chuck.

“You better get back here,” he said. “Something’s happened. Something terrible.”
